COSMETIC PROCEDURES

Dr. Smith performs the following cosmetic procedures:

Chemical Peels

BOTOX

Fillers

Skin Care Products

Laser

CHEMICAL PEELS

Dr. Smith uses glycolic acid, a type of alpha hydroxy acid, in different concentrations to correct a variety of skin problems including acne and mild acne scarring, melasma, sun damage, and fine lines. Peels take approximately 15 minutes and you may experience a mild itching or stinging sensation. Afterwards the skin may be pink, but usually you can apply makeup and go back to work or other social activities. A series of 6 peels done monthly are recommended for best results.

BOTOX

This is an FDA-approved treatment consisting of an injection of a small amount of botulinum toxin into the muscles underneath wrinkles or frown lines predominantly on the upper face. This procedure relaxes the muscles to soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Numbing cream can be used prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. The procedure takes only a few minutes and requires little to no downtime. The results take effect after about three to fourteen days, and the improvement then lasts for three to six months.

Botox can also be used for patients with Hyperhidrosis, or excess sweating under the arms. This treatment is often covered by insurance, and lasts 6-12 months.

FILLERS

Dr. Smith uses Restylane to fill in lines on the lower face as well as scars and lips. This is an FDA-approved non-animal derived hyaluronic acid filler substance. Since hyaluronic acid is a normal constituent of our bodies, it is a very safe, non-allergenic filler. Restylane can last from three to eight months, depending upon where it is injected. Numbing creams and/or nerve blocks can be done to minimize discomfort associated with the injection.

Information for all laser patients:

  • Not recommended on tanned skin; patients should avoid intentional and/or recreational sun exposure and must use daily sunscreen with an SPF of 30 on affected areas for 4 weeks prior to 1st treatment and then throughout the treatment course to minimize risk of complications (blistering, pigment changes, possible scarring, lack of efficacy)
  • Avoid self tanners 1 month prior to treatment
  • Avoid Retin A/Renova/Differin/Tazorac for 1 week in areas to be treated
  • Avoid any medications that make you more sensitive to the sun
  • Can not treat patients that are: pregnant, have a history of seizures, Lupus or other collagen vascular disease, have used Accutane within 1 year, or have a history of thickened/keloid scars
  • Notify the doctor in advance of treatment if you have a history of staph infections or cold sores for pre-medication
  • Do not apply any lotions/makeup/deodorant to the areas to be treated or else wash them off prior to being seen
  • Treatment feels similar to a rubber band snapping the skin
  • $50 cancellation fee will apply if not cancelled within 24 hours notice.

Additional information for laser hair reduction patients:

  • The laser doesn’t work on blonde or gray hair
  • It also doesn’t work if patient has underlying hormonal abnormalities
  • One treatment is not sufficient to see any difference; an average of 3-5 treatments are recommended every 4-6 weeks with 80% hair reduction at one year; then an average of 1 maintenance treatment per year is needed
  • Shave approximately 1 day in advance; no waxing or plucking for 6 weeks or the hair will not be there to be destroyed by the laser

Additional information for patients with blood vessels/spider veins/rosacea:

  • 2-3 treatments are needed and should be spaced apart approximately 6 weeks
  • If the patient has underlying varicose veins then those need to be treated first by a vascular surgeon
  • The areas treated may turn red and/or bruise; this can be covered with makeup

Additional information for patients with freckles/spots/etc.:

  • 1-2 treatments are needed and can be done once per month
  • Spots will turn dark immediately and will take 1-2 weeks to fall off; they can be covered with makeup

Additional information for laser rejuvenation:

  • Treatment takes 30-45 minutes per area and should be done monthly for 6 months for best results
  • You will feel a warm sensation which is not painful
  • Afterwards the area will be pink/red for a day or so and can be covered with makeup
